What movies gets you every time?
The first movie I ever watched that would have caused a kid in a normal house to shed tears was Brian's Song. I remember the lump in my throat as I watched with my mother. Afraid a brother would come in and torment me. From then on I fought off movie tears, distracting myself at the sad parts.

Then I went off to see Steel Magnolias one time. And I did shed tears. I have watched it so many times I have lost count and always tear up. Once it was showing on the bus. I didn't have my head set on but at the post funeral scene I still teared up. I just switched channels a minute ago. and it was just ending. If you have seen it (and I hope you have as it is wonderful) it was the part at the end where they were having the egg hunt with odds and ends going on. I still choked up. Funny how some things touch you like that.

Anyone else have a movie that they know will put that spark shiny eye look on their faces? Funny thing is that they feel like "safe tears". The friend I was with also cried and I have never met anyone who has watched and loved it who did not cry. Such a mix of laughter and tears. Maybe it is the laughter that makes room for the tears.Heart

RE: What movies gets you every time?
I have an odd relationship with some movies. I get an indication, I feel it, of something that either is happening or will happen in my life. It always takes me by surprise, and I don't make the connection in time to help myself. Though the last one was so in my face, that I'm preparing. Most of the time, these are very painful lessons.

The Bridges of Madison County does it every time. I know the event to which it would refer. The heartbreak, and that I just have to live with it, but it doesn't define me. I've visited Roseman Bridge twice and left messages there. Lots of people do, on the inner walls of this covered bridge. Years of messages.

Million Dollar Baby (not recommended for anyone here), another Clint Eastwood vehicle, about boxing. The immediate lesson was never to turn my back (awareness) away from an enemy, but there's more to it and I'm working on it. Once was enough.

I think I get what you are saying. A newer movie called The Blind Side, has been on TV, gets me. It is a true story with pretty parts added. A young black boy is taken in by a white family and they adopt him, get him into football through high school and college to the pros. Sandra Bullock is in it and I love her (reminds me I want to go and see her latest).

At the end of the movie she is reading a newspaper article about a young boy who had so much athletic potential in basketball but with no guidance he made bad choices, fell out of school and was kicked out of life. There is talk about the difference some guidance would have made for him. I think of myself with that part. With all of it. I imagine that there are many here, who like me, wonder how things would have turned out if they had a life where someone scooped them up and carried them off to ever ever land.

I haven't seen the sports-related Sandra Bullock movie, but saw the trailer and it looks like a good story. The role suited her.
I've seen Hope Floats, also with S.B., a couple of times. It shows how good parenting can prevail even when a mother slips up some, due to a breach of trust by the husband which leads to divorce. There's backup by a wonderful grandmother too. A good movie. Throughout it all, there's safety for the child and all concerned. I never had that. I don't really have it now.

Agree with what you're saying. I should have been airlifted out of FOO household. Needed a mentor too. I had the stuff to do something with my life......... On the other hand, I managed to survive childhood. (laughing)
nice talking with you,

There is another one that just came to video and another that came out a few years ago. In both she plays a similar character. A straight arrow with no sense of humour. In the one that just came out she is always trying to be the perfect cop but does not play well with others. She ends up being partnered with someone who was totally the opposite, heavy slob who never played by the rules. Too funny and Sandra's character grows because of this woman she considers to be so beneath her. In the other one the story lie is different but she starts off the same and changes through others. All of her sharp edges bumped off. Ah the movies make itlook so easy. But I love her acting because she makes me laugh.

Sandra Bullock relaxes me, which is very important. There's a lightness to her.
My favorite S.B. movie is The Lake House. It's so very well done, and the concept of time is interesting to me. Happy ending too. I liked Miss Congeniality (a quietly amusing cop mystery, though a basically comedic script in a police setting won't do it for me.). She made it look easy, but it's not.

I have tremendous respect for the acting craft, which partially comes from hearing the last minutes of a TV interview of Cate Blanchett, one of my favorite actresses. Another fav is Meryl Streep. Actually, one of Cate Blanchett's films, Heaven, is one of my tearjerkers, but not suggested for people here.

Carol Burnett can drive me into a giggle fest. Robin Williams, as well. John Goodman is a gifted comic and dramatic actor. Very few actors can. Most comedy is lost on me, though I find mild, spontaneous funnies just walking the streets of NYC.
The Carol Burnett Show was a work of art; Tim Conway could get to me. Jean Stapleton (All in the Family) had a gift for innocent comedy. Ah, and how could I forget Johnny Carson's interactions with animal guests on his late-night TV show.
Kathy Bates was a rip as a nun in Shirley MacLaine's Bruno (a sweet movie, though not a comedy). Come to think of it, you might like it. Plot summary in Wikipedia.

My funniest movie experience:
The kitchen scenes, when prospective in-laws are visiting, in The Bird Cage (Robin Williams version). Perfect, and the film editing makes it!
There's more about actors and movies that I've forgotten.

We seem to have common tastes in movies. Comedies are my favorites where there is a message in there if you pay attention. I also like the Sister Ac Movies. And Michael is one of our "we need comfort" movies as it reminds us to believe. For some it is God but it is also about learning to trust and believe in ourselves. Plus we have our own Angel Michael who is a protector.

There are meetings of the giggles. And we both like to find personal meaning in cinema. My favorite subject matter is often emotionally intense, physically combative, and beautifully filmed. I need to relax my mind as well, for balance.

Interesting that the name Michael comes up, again, in the form of the Archangel. I did a little research. From what I've seen, you couldn't have a better protector. There is something comforting about this entity, even as viewed by an atheist.
I discovered him, those protective wings, in a painting in St. Patrick's Cathedral. The same day, I met a priest who was named Michael, in another church. I hadn't recalled the movie. Thanks.
I'll return to St. Patrick's to see if I feel the same way. I think I will. The painting of Michael and Jesus on either side of Joseph (if I remember correctly), is lovely and I'd like to know its significance and obtain a small copy of it.
I go briefly and sporadically to different kinds of churches for the music, a quiet place to rest & look at structure and art, and sometimes a place to come to terms with the impossible (as it was last Sunday, after a movie I saw on TV on Sat. night shook me up).
I've learned not to say much because I'm misunderstood as being ready to take on a faith. I have my ways, and am not "open minded" as some would describe me. I didn't realize that in describing, because I'm asked, some of how I view things, I was insulting. I found that out when fm told me about a book he wanted to read by C.S. Lewis. I looked it up online and came upon a passage, and was corrected.

Back to movies......

I liked the Bourne series, especially The Bourne Ultimatum. Didn't care to see The Bourne Legacy. Phenomenal rhythm to the action that fit with the music. Good martial arts.
Hurt Locker (war); The Tiger and the Snow (Roberto Benigni); 2001, A Space Odyssey; Andrei Rublev (4-hr. Russian work of art about the life of the famous icon painter, shows the times, the wars; Diva; Bagdad Cafe; Batman Begins; The Dark Knight (about as dark as it gets); Lancelot du Lac (war in middle ages); Ronin (crime drama); Leon: The Professional (crime drama); Stanley and Iris; Moonstruck (Cher & Nicolas Cage); Heat (1995 crime drama with De Niro and Pacino); some of The Lord of the Rings series; The Trip to Bountiful (family drama); Ratatouille; Howl's Moving Castle; The Devil Wears Prada; The French Lieutenant's Woman; Falling in Love (De Niro and Streep); Serendipity (light romantic movie with John Cusack); Ran (Kurosawa. rough); Dreams (Kurosawa. Vivid and beautifully filmed. Not suitable for littles); Groundhog Day; Siberiade (1979 Russian movie); 3 Women (fabulous example of American cinema, but depressing as heck); Hunt For Red October; Oblomov (Russian movie).

Nice to think back. So many I've forgotten.

If you are allowed to take photos of Michael with Jesus we would be pleased to have a copy. And as you mentioned martial arts I will add a bit of the Pirate into the midst for she loves all things Jackie Chan.

New movie out in Nov With 4 funny guys (when they choose to be.) Las Vegas. Want to see that.

Will see about photo taking. I have a dumb, as opposed to a smart, phone with a camera I haven't as yet used. This painting is way above human height level. I know that no photos are allowed at the shrines. I'll ask. Hope so.
Jackie Chan seems to be a nice person and does good work. Years ago, I read the book he wrote about his early life.
Ah, Las Vegas! I've passed thru briefly three or four times. Love the lights. It's a rough town underneath the tinsel, I think. In summer it's beastly hot. I'm not a gambler. If I had the head for it, I'd learn Texas Hold 'Em. I have a Vegas baseball style cap.

Pass on Vegas IRL. Too much flashy and ringy make The people go crazy. I also wonder if we pick up on the "rough underbelly" of casinos as we are so comfortable there.

As for the painting. The Cathedral is undergoing extensive renovations. The part where the painting resides was completely covered last week. I was told to contact one of their priests on Monday, tomorrow. I plan to do so. I have an unrelated question too.
