the news - dreamers - 07-14-2012

For reasons I won't go into here the news is very triggering for us especially for the littles. we used to be able to filter it away from them until they started thinking it might contain info about a friend who is volunteering overseas... we spent the last year trying to tell them that that was not the case but, if she was ever in the paper we would show them, to no avail. So, like 6 months ago we got rid of the newspaper subscription and put the news channels on parent block... well this week,
I finally figured out a way to get the important news without freaking out everyone in my system. I subscribed to a news magizine for middle schoolers. Looking at a sample, they cover the health care law and the election but, leave out " who-did-what to whom" junk.

Perfect solution! You might want to double-check the source to be sure the info is accurate and not so partisan-based that it's mis-information. Other than that, win/win! Very clever way around the triggers. Smile

Excellent idea, dreamers. Does this news for middle schoolers have a website?

Hi orek and Mds,
thanks for the encouragement. The publisher is scholastic so i think it should be ok info wise. they produce mags for all grades k-6. I signed up for the 5/6 version. The website is http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/scholasticnews/index.html
